President's Message from Drake
Aloha HFUU-East Hawai'i Members! We have some really great things growing, and I'm glad to be a part of such an innovative organization!

On the State level, the HFUU is moving towards being chartered! This means we will be officially part of the National Farmers Union, allowing us a vote on how National policy is decided. We can also create policy on the local level that may percolate up to become policy all across America. This is big because we have some innovative practices being proven here in Hawai'i, such as Korean Natural Farming no-smell pigs, that could have a huge impact when implemented on a larger scale.

As president, it is great to be in the conference calls with all the Chapter Presidents and share their passion for growing family farms across the Hawaiian Islands. I met with Vincent Mina, our State President, at the Hawai'i Hemp Conference this past month, and boy, is he enthusiastic about agriculture. Smiles ear to ear!

Our Chapter board is also a pleasure to work with. We have revitalized our Membership and Communication Committees. We are focusing on:
  • Expanding merchant discounts for our membership,
  • Strengthening our numbers by reaching out to new and past members, and
  • Bringing you a monthly newsletter.

There are some great events coming up, including our State Convention in October. I hope to see you there.

I've served on the East Hawai'i Chapter board since 2015 and see a lot of positive movement ahead of us still. I was appointed president this past May, and with your help, we can expand and grow this noble organization. I'd like to thank our secretary Jess Sobocinski, vice-president Yuri Zhuraw, treasurer Aleysia Kaha, and our board members Ala Keolanui, Chris Hardenbrook, and Liam Gray for volunteering their time to be a part of the leadership in service to you and family farmers everywhere!

The next full membership gathering will be September 16 at my family's farm with a focus on swine raised by Korean Natural Farming protocols. We have invited the Swine Co-op in the educational portion of the day to collaborate with their expertise.

We have shifted our membership meeting schedule from monthly to quarterly meetings. With a focus on quality over quantity, members are able to gather, be of service to a fellow farmer for a few hours, and get exclusive access to practical education. I really encourage you to join all these gatherings as they invigorate us all, and it's a great opportunity to bring some friends who want to know what HFUU is all about.

Our other big goals are to work with other Chapters and organizations on the Island to support each other and collaborate toward essential projects. Truly, we want to practice the "Union United" in the Hawaii Farmers Union United!

May the beneficial microbes be with you!
Drake
