Learn About Banana Cultivation from Renown Expert
Guest presenter, Gabriel Sachter-Smith grew up in the mountains of Colorado where he began studying bananas at the age of 13. Continuing his informal studies throughout high school, he moved to Hawaii in 2007 to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he earned his BS in Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences in 2011, and his MS in 2015. During his time at the university, he helped to start and eventually run the Student Organic Farm Training (SOFT) program for 5 years where he gained hands on experience in growing and marketing a wide variety of crops.

After spending 2 years figuring out what to do after graduation, including 1.5 years farming on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, he moved back to Hawaii in 2017 to join the Counter Culture team and pursue his dream of starting a banana farm. During his school studies, and now as a private consultant, he has had the opportunity to visit many farms all over the world where he draws inspiration and ideas from to add to  Counter Culture's own farm adventure. He currently assists the Counter Culture team in all manner of farm tasks, and tries to keep the farm in shape while we aim to increase production. Gabe also helps drive the Counter Culture and Farm Link Hawai'i delivery truck to get those goods to our supporters.
