*** Haleakalā Chapter's 103rd Consecutive Meeting***
KALAMA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL CAFETERIA
Doors Open 5:30 PM  •  Opening Circle 6:00 PM

Aloha Kākou,

Our next Haleakala Chapter meeting is Tuesday, April 23rd in the cafeteria of Kalama Intermediate School on Makani Ave in Makawao. Please note that you should use the upper parking lot, adjacent to the cafeteria and administration building.  If that lot fills up, we will open the lower gate for additional parking.

We are continuing to offer our Junior Farmers Program with ag-centric activities for ages 3+ in a separate room under the direction of Havilah Mills. Participation is free, just sign up your child(ren) at the membership desk upon arrival. This is a great program that goes far beyond just baby-sitting and we ask that you let your friends and neighbors know this is now available.
We have another great slate of presentations this month but we will begin with our annual membership meeting and we will need 50 members present for quorum so please come early.

In addition to the always-amazing Georgia Pinsky and Harriet Witt, we will hear from Lehn Huff, Director of the Maui School Garden Network. Seven years ago they planted ulu trees on school campuses and the results are astonishing.

We will also hear from our own VP, Reba O’Day, who will bring us up to date on the National Farm Bill, why it matters and why HFUU is supporting it.

And Bryna Storch, a farmer from Kauai and secretary of the HFUU Kauai chapter, will present an introduction to the new FSMA rules, essential farm safety practices for all farms, and opportunities for the trainings and certifications that are now required for farmers.

Here’s the full agenda:

Support Ha'iku Elementary School Garden
The Haiku Elementary School Garden is looking for donations of produce and plants to support their School Garden Farmer’s Market during this year’s Ho’olaule’a Festival!

The 26th Annual Ha’ikū Ho’olaule’a & Flower Festival is coming up on Saturday April 27, 2019. At the event, the Haiku School Garden will host a “School Garden Farmer’s Market” to raise funds for ongoing garden infrastructure and improvements. We are asking our community farms and farm supply stores for donations to the market. All funds earned from this market will go directly to support the School Garden and other associated extra curriculars. The school garden relies on this event to help fund-raise for and finance garden projects throughout the next year.

Donations can include anything from fresh produce to cut flowers, herbs, plant starts, potted plants, packaged farm goods or products, and more! School Garden Director, Havilah Mills, would love to talk to you more about how you can help make this year’s event the most successful yet!

Will you support the kids and garden at Haiku School? Please consider contributing some of your farm abundance! Volunteers will be available to pick up your donation if you are unable to drop it off.

Please contact:
Havilah Mills, School Garden Director

Mãhalo Nui Loa,

John Dobovan

Haleakalã Chapter President

As always, this meeting is a locavore potluck, and we appreciate you bringing enough food for yourself and some to share, or making a generous contribution so your chapter can continue populating the amazing food table we are known for.

We want you to bring your farm fresh goodies, cuttings and seeds to swap at the produce swap table, the more we all bring, the more abundance there will be at our meetings, and the better our personal inventories of plant cultivars on our farms will be as well.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Look for the suggestion box by the door when you enter the meeting and let us know what you'd like to see happening at our meetings. Please think about topics you'd like to explore in breakout sessions at future meetings, write them down and let us know.

Mahalo to all of you for supporting this organization. We are the change we are waiting for. Let’s keep working together to make Maui the agriculture paradise it will be.
