Hawai’i Farmers Union United, Mauna Kahalawai Chapter presents its monthly locavore from 6 to 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner served from 6-6:45 p.m.) Thursday, January 10th at Maui Chef’s Table at The Maui Tropical Plantation.
This months Featured Farmers are Mike & Terra Brownback, the founders of Spiral Path Farm - a certified organic vegetable farm in Perry County, PA since 1978. They are both first generation farmers. The first 15 years on farm were spent with a farrow- to- finish hog operation, with grains/hay crops, before transitioning to organic vegetable farm in 1994. Today, two grown sons, Will and Lucas Brownback, both farm with the family on 300 certified organic acres, about 85 acres in produce, 5 acres under greenhouse vegetable production and 13,000 square feet of transplant production for on- farm use. They are passionate about soil fertility and increasing nutrient density of food and enjoy creativity with trying new methods of farming. Spiral Path Farm employs about 45 in peak of season. Organic Produce is marketed via wholesale, CSA Members, and Farmer’s markets.
Our Featured Educator for the evening will be William Grinnell. Will moved with his wife and son to Maui in 2010 from Squam Lake, NH where he was raised. He has been an organic gardener and cannabis farmer since his teens. Previous to moving to Maui Will worked as a carpenter and general contractor, starting his own business, Woodwise Builders, in 1980. Woodwise Builders specialized in historic renovations and Squam Lake Island marine contracting. In 1994 Will started a new business, Origins Music International, booking and management for international music touring artists. Since moving to Maui, Will presented Origins Music International concert events, promoting shows throughout the Islands. Will’s creative energies are now focused on his partnership with The Maui Cannabis Guild working on legislation that will bring a fair and just set of laws for a strong industry with legal adult use cannabis, with a focus on sustainability for the people of Maui.
