Aloha Kākou,

The HFUU State Convention is coming up fast: October 26, 27 & 28 at Oko‘a Farms right up here in Kula. There will be numerous excellent presentations as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner and films both Friday and Saturday evenings. If you haven’t already registered I urge you to register now. Non-member / Lapsed members, join now (once logged as member select Current Events to register).

The cost includes full access to all events and your choice of some (plan A) or all (plan B) meals. This will be a great opportunity to network with fellow HFUU members from across the State. Check out the Schedule of Presenters.

Housing for Visitors: Do you have a room to offer a presenter, delegate or member from another island? Contact HFUU Treasurer, Karen Reid.

Volunteer Opportunity: If you would like to earn half-day admittance, a meal and a 2018 HFUU Annual Convention t-shirt, in exchange for a 4-5 hour work shift, contact Communications/Volunteer Director, Keith Ranney at hfuu@hfuuhi.org.

REMINDER!

Our next chapter meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 23rd, at the Hã‘iku Community Center. Doors open at 5:30. We will be starting promptly at 6pm. This month’s focus is on mushrooms. Our guest chef this month is Chef Rishi from Cassanova in Makawao. He will be creating Mushroom Alfredo and a Caesar salad for your dining pleasure.

Our first guest speaker will be Loxley Clovis, who will speak on fungi from a permaculture perspective. Loxley is a permaculture instructor and farmhand at Ola Mau Farms, growing heirloom kalo. He is also a co-founder of The Story Connective, a multimedia platform covering the Maui’s agricultural transition through a podcast series called RE-Envision Maui. In his free time he likes to volunteer with ‘auwai maintenance and reforestation efforts. Loxley is passionate about both education and mycology.

Our second speaker is Curt Banzinger, owner of Kokuakats Farm. He will speak about growing and marketing oyster mushrooms.

I will have an update on the Hukilike No Maui proposal for 5,000 acres of the fallow A& B sugar lands.

Once again, we will be interspersing our unraffle throughout the evening in order to allow everybody a chance to participate more fully.

Here’s the full agenda:

  • 6:00p: Blessing & Dinner
  • 6:00p-6:30p: sign-up for open mic (10 people, 1 min max)
  • 6:45p: Open Mic

Mãhalo Nui Loa,

John Dobovan

Haleakalã Chapter President

As always, this meeting is a locavore potluck, and we appreciate you bringing enough food for yourself and some to share, or making a generous contribution so your chapter can continue populating the amazing food table we are known for.

We want you to bring your farm fresh goodies, cuttings and seeds to swap at the produce swap table, the more we all bring, the more abundance there will be at our meetings, and the better our personal inventories of plant cultivars on our farms will be as well.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Look for the suggestion box by the door when you enter the meeting and let us know what you'd like to see happening at our meetings. Please think about topics you'd like to explore in breakout sessions at future meetings, write them down and let us know.

Mahalo to all of you for supporting this organization. We are the change we are waiting for. Let’s keep working together to make Maui the agriculture paradise it will be.
