Hawai'i Farmers Union United, Mauna Kahalawai Chapter presents its monthly locavore potluck from 6 to 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) Thursday, October 11th - in Chef’s Table at Maui Tropical Plantation, 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy. Mauna Kahalawai Chapter meets 2nd Thursday each month.

This months Featured Educators are is Hannah Shipman of Blue Planet Foundation and Walter Enomoto of Hawaii Energy.

Blue Planet Foundation is a local nonprofit powering the transition to 100% clean energy in Hawaii and leading the way for global change. We find creative ways to remove the obstacles that stand between us and a future free from fossil fuels. Through bold advocacy, energy awareness, and community action our programs are creating sustainable change one step at a time.

Walter Enomoto is currently the Program Specialist for Hawaii Energy in Maui County. He helps to implement all Hawaii Energy residential and commercial programs and processes applications for energy efficiency measures. He also meets with various trade allies, vendors, and business owners, as well provides presentations to different groups and organizations to promote energy efficiency. Prior to this position, Walter developed renewable energy projects in Maui County including the first Feed In Tariff (FIT) systems in the State of Hawaii and first solar PPA in Maui County. He also served previously as the Commercial and Industrial Program Manager for Maui Electric Company’s Demand Side Management Program. His educational background includes the first Associate’s Degree in Sustainable Technologies from Maui Community College/UH Maui and a Bachelor of Business Administration from UH-Hilo. When not working, Walter enjoys bicycling, photography, movies and astronomy pursuits. He was also recognized by Maui No Ka Oi Magazine as one of its “Environmental Heroes” for 2011 for his two decades of work advocating bicycle use.

Our Featured Farmer for the evening is Hugh Starr of HEW STARR & CO., LLC. Starr was born on Oʻahu and attended Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy on Hawaiʻi Island. He is a graduate of Cornell University, served in the USAF, and has been a licensed real estate broker on Maui since 1971. Hugh is an active community member and has previously served as Realtor representative to the Hawaii State legislature and Maui County.


The Evening will Feature Live Entertainment by Cambria Moss.

The Evening will also Feature Food Presentations, Live Entertainment, Prize Giveaways, Networking, and More!

Our chapter will be adjusting our entrance policies and fees for all Future Locavores effective November 2018. All Members and Non-Members attending our locavore events will be charged a fee to enter. Whether a Member or Non Member Brings a Dish or Not, the Fees still apply to All Attendees.

You don’t need to be a farmer to support Hawai'i Farmers Union United. Anyone who is concerned about where our food comes from is welcome. Come network with local producers and talk story about growing one's own food.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share (to feed six people). Cost is $10 for Hawai'i Farmers Union United members; $15 for non-members. This is a waste-free event. Please bring your own plate and utensils, or they will be provided for a fee.

You may become a member at the event, or by visiting HFUUHI.org. Individual annual membership is $50, or $100 for a family of four.
