GUEST SPEAKERS
This months Featured Farmer is Theo Carlat: Presentation on The Australian Biodynamic Method. Biodynamic success down under has been greatly overlooked by most of the world.

Theo Carlat is a sixth generation rancher/farmer originally from Montana. In the early 1980’s he was introduced to biodynamic agriculture in southern, CA. In 1985 he had been farming at Kahumana Farm and Community in, Waianae, HI. At that time Theo had lived three years in Hawaii. He has traveled widely, researched, and farmed Biodynamically for thirty-five years now. But, he didnʻt find the answers he was looking for in Europe or North America. It was in Australia, under the leadership of Alex Podolinsky, that he had found what he was looking for. Many years ago, Theo met Christopher Bird in Hawaii; who had retired on Molokai, wrote with Peter Tompkins “Secrets of the Soil” (1989) and the “Secret Life of Plants”(1973). Secrets of the Soil was a breakthrough book for biodynamics as the authors went to Australia and interviewed Alex Podolinsky.
Our Featured Educator for the evening will be Jason Hew. Jason will be discussing the opportunities that producers have with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD). The organization creates conservation plans for technical assistance. Those conservation plans can also apply for federal financial assistance through the NRCS Farmbill programs. These programs will be discussed in more depth at the meeting. More information on the farmbill programs can be found at this website.
The Evenings food presentation will be done by Chef Ed Morita. Chef Morita has spent more than a decade working as a pastry chef at some of the country's premiere resorts and restaurants, including the Halekulani Hotel, The Greenbrier Resort & Spa in West Virginia, Bay Harbor Yacht Club in Michigan and Longhi’s Restaurant in Honolulu.

Live Entertainment, Prize Giveaways, Networking, and More.

You don’t need to be a farmer to support Hawai'i Farmers Union United. Anyone who is concerned about where our food comes from is welcome. Come network with local producers and talk story about growing one's own food.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share (to feed six people). Otherwise, cost is $10 for Hawai'i Farmers Union United members; $12 for non-members. This is a waste-free event. Please bring your own plate and utensils, or they will be provided for a fee.

You may become a member at the event, or by visiting HFUUHI.org. Annual membership is $50, or $100 for a family of four.
