Hawai'i Farmers Union United, Mauna Kahalawai Chapter presents its monthly locavore potluck from 6 to 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) Thursday, August 9th - in Chef’s Table at Maui Tropical Plantation, 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy. Mauna Kahalawai Chapter meets the second Thursday of each month.

This months Featured Farmers are Aukai and Wendy Hatchie of Maui Goat Yoga. Aukai and Wendy Hatchie opened Maui Goat Yoga in September 2017. Aukai is a lifetime native Hawaiian beneficiary originally from Papakolea, Oahu and Wendy is from Westlake Village, California. Aukai is a US Air Force Veteran and currently is an Enrolled Agent licensed by the IRS and Wendy is a Pro Adviser Bookkeeper and has owned DWK Tax Group, Inc., a Tax Relief firm since January 2009. They currently reside on Hawaiian Trust Lands in Keokea…what they call, “God’s Country.”

Since building their new home, they quickly realized plant farming was going to be a challenge. Why? Massive amounts of Blue Rock through-out the 2.9 acre property and a topography suitable for…livestock or well, specifically goats.

Their intent for Maui Goat Yoga is to provide an alternative approach to health and fitness by introducing Nigerian Dwarf Goats to the Yoga Class as a source for animal therapy, a new avenue to relieve stress we all experience on a daily basis. The Original Fabulous Five goats were actually bred to begin their journey into the world of yoga and goat infusion. They keep the Yoga pure yet adjustable for beginners. Cookie, Sweet Pea, Daisy (Certified papered), Duder and John Snow were bottle fed from birth and spoiled rotten from the very beginning. By doing so, the goat demeanor is calm, playful and kolohe.

They have since added Bella Luna, Astrid, Alfredo and Tsunami, all papered. The last 2 are Studs or Bucks. They are excited to share their story!

Our Featured Educator for the evening will be Kumu Kaleikoa Kaʻeo. Kumu Kaleikoa is a Professor of Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii Maui College. He is a Cultural Leader, a Voice, and an Advocate for all things Pono for the ʻAina, and Na ʻŌiwi o ka ʻĀina.

You don’t need to be a farmer to support Hawai'i Farmers Union United. Anyone who is concerned about where our food comes from is welcome. Come network with local producers and talk story about growing one's own food.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share (to feed six people). Otherwise, cost is $10 for Hawai'i Farmers Union United members; $12 for non-members. This is a waste-free event. Please bring your own plate and utensils, or they will be provided for a fee.
