For this month's meeting, we are focusing on waste, i.e. how to plan ahead for our island's waste systems and how to upcycle waste to be used in the home or on the farm.

Michael Kaha, the Deputy Division Chief of Hawai'i County Dept. of Environmental Management - Solid Waste Division, will briefly explain solid waste solutions for our island followed by a talk story session to help farmers and community to better interact and understand solid waste in East Hawai'i.

We will be helping Maggy and Ethan of Kulaniapia Farms finish part of their new greenhouse pony wall with Eco Bricks and cement. Here is the video I posted on Facebook explaining in detail about Eco Bricks and how you can help us source materials (and put your waste somewhere useful!)

Let's "upcycle" those usually uneaten vegetable parts!
Cooked Squash Vine Tips: Collect as many 2"-3" vine tips as you can from an edible squash. Blanch for 10 minutes and dry. Add some chopped onion, tomato, and a light coating of toasted sesame oil and shoyu. Mix and serve immediately.

What to do with daikon leaves

Hope to see you there!
