SPECIAL GUESTS
The evening’s guest speakers include Steve Phillips of Local Harvest, who will present a talk titled On a Mission to Feed an Island. Phillips is the Hawaiʻi representative for PROUT (the Progressive Utilization Theory). He shares PROUT’s philosophy, which believes in local self-reliance, a cooperative-based economy and the divine nature of all beings. Phillips has worked for cooperative businesses on the mainland for more than two decades, and advocates for the development of cooperative models on Maui. He currently oversees four businesses that work toward that purpose: Local Harvest, Island Fresh Delivery, Napili Farmer’s Market and Sattvic Kitchen.

Bobby Pahia is the HFUU Mauna Kahalawai chapter president and owner of Hoaloha Farms. He will present a talk titled “Promoting Agriculture in Waikapū.” Hoaloha Farms supplies its parent restaurant company Nā Hoaloha ʻEkolu (Star Noodle, Old Lāhaina Lūʻau and Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina, as well as Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop in Olowalu) with several varieties of kalo and other crops. Pahia grows nearly two-dozen heirloom kalo varieties on his Waikapū farm, including mana ‘ulu, the popular Maui lehua, and the rare ʻele‘ele naioea.

Dr. Christie Balcomb started YourVet Farm Services in 2016, a mobile livestock veterinary service offering routine and preventative medicine, as well as advanced imaging, surgical and medical procedures to clients. Dr. Balcomb also offers educational workshops for the community regarding animal health and husbandry topics. She is a member of the Hawai'i Cattlemen’s Council and the Hawai'i Sheep and Goat Association and hopes to enhance the health and welfare of the commercial and companion livestock in Hawaiʻi. She will present a talk titled “Animal Health on the Farm.”

The evening will also include live entertainment by Kekoa Kalehuawehe, prize giveaways, networking, and more.
