Aloha Kākou,

With great gladness in my heart, its again my pleasure to invite you to be with us at the Haiku Community center for our monthly meeting. We have a fantastic line up for you thin month, Chef Perry of Mama’s Fish House will share some of his insights about being a supplier/farmer/fisher/rancher for their fine establishment.

Following that, we will show our collective support for one of Maui’s newest nonprofits, the common ground collective, who have recently formed to support agriculture and our family of farmers.

Another important item of interest to remember and share with your friends is the application process for the Farmer Apprenticeship mentoring program is nearing its end. If you are interested in apprenticing with some of Maui’s finest farmers, email our program Director Phyllis Robinson at fam@hfuf.org. A little bit about our guest speakers:

Chef PerryChef Perry Bateman is in constant contact with Maui’s fishers, farmers and ranchers to deliver what he calls “their pride and joy,” fresh procured to diners at Mama’s idyllic oceanside restaurant. “I work with a team who understands that it’s a gift to be able to prepare dishes with the freshest fish possible, straight from the ocean to our door every day,” Perry says. “We get to use ingredients like sweet Maui onions just picked from the high elevations of Haleakalä, and lü‘au leaf, watercress and kalo (taro) from the streams down by the ocean.” Chef Perry will share his insights into what it means to be a part of the Mama’s Fish House supply chain, and how our members can be a part of this locavore opportunity.

Jennifer KaracaJennifer Karaca is founder and executive director of the newly formed Common Ground Collective. We are proud to support this new nonprofit with some of our chapter leadership. Go CGC! Jennifer graduated with her BAS in Sustainable Science Management from the University of Hawaii. Jennifer is a teacher, gardener, permaculture designer and environmental activist.

Common Ground Collective logoCGC Vision: The Vision of the Common Ground Collective is to create a place where anyone with land, a farm or Agricultural related business or aspirations of farming can find the help and connections they need to be more successful. We are striving to fill in the gaps in Maui’s Agricultural sector to boost local food production, increase economic security, promote environmental education and increase the use of regenerative farming practices. Do you like this agenda? If you have recommendations for future events, please let your representative on the Board know what you would like your HFUU Haleakala Chapter to be doing. Email haleakala-president@hfuuhi.org with recommendations, comments, questions or concerns about your chapter.

As always, this meeting is a locavore potluck, and we appreciate you bringing enough food for yourself and some to share, or making a generous contribution so your chapter can continue populating the amazing food table we are known for.

We want you to bring your farm fresh goodies, cuttings and seeds to swap at the produce swap table, the more we all bring, the more abundance there will be at our meetings, and the better our personal inventories of plant cultivars on our farms will be as well. Sharing is caring, let’s make it happen! The three top givers of the most abundant swap items will be given complimentary deserts with the tickets for the un-raffle.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Look for the suggestion box by the door when you enter the meeting and let us know what you'd like to see happening at our meetings. Please think about topics you'd like to explore in breakout sessions at future meetings, write them down and let us know.

Mahalo to all of you for supporting this organization, we are the change we are waiting for, let’s keep working together to make Maui the agriculture paradise it will be.

With aloha,

Simon Russell

HFUU-Haleakalā Chapter
President
